When I was a little girl, I loved listening to books on my small record player in my room–one of my favorites was Winnie the Pooh. I wanted to be just like Christopher Robin who was invited to birthday parties with honey cakes and tea. He could take walks on “blustery days” and do “Nothing” in the 100 Acre Wood. I dreamed that my stuffed animals would come to life and we could have the same kind of adventures.
Now that I’m all grown up, I still love these stories–but for a different reason. I find there is great wisdom on how to lead a better life. My favorite line is when Winnie the Pooh tells his true friend, Piglet: “Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” Wouldn’t you love to have a friend tell this to you?
I think that we don’t need to wait for a friend to tell us. Maybe we can be that good friend–to ourselves. With all the hard work we do to improve ourselves, we also need to remember to treat ourselves like a good friend would treat us–with words full of encouragement, compassion, and understanding. So please pass the honey cake and tea.
